The long and dangerous road to school

THE HISTORY...

Maitai has been lucky enough to go to school with her younger sister, but every morning when she wakes up she thinks with horror what awaits her. You will have to walk 5 kilometers, leave before dawn and pass through the Masai Mara reserve that is full of wildlife. Maitai is a 10 years old Masai boy, he is the 5 of the 8 siblings that make up his family who lives in his small mud hut in a small village. His father has a few cows and his older brother is the one who takes care of them while his mother is in charge of fetching firewood and water.

Some days he does not return home, preferring to sleep on the dusty floor of his classroom.
Every time we went to visit the school, the children’s parents and teachers asked us to build dormitories. Africa Digna has already built three in three different schools. Each bedroom consists of a boys ‘wing, a girls’ wing, showers and sinks as well as a kitchen and dining room.
When we see Maitai her white tooth smile lights up her face and we laugh with her.
